Pan-Fried Lion’s Mane Mushrooms

This Pan-Fried Lion’s Mane mushroom recipe proves that simple ingredients can create something delish. Once fried, these mushrooms give you a delicate and delicious umami overload!

With just mushrooms, butter, and a pinch of salt, you’ll transform these into something that looks like a pan-fried chicken nugget, but they have a buttery, delicate flavor. They develop a crispy, golden-brown exterior while staying tender inside, making them a perfect meatless main or side dish.

What makes Lion’s Mane even more appealing is their health benefits. They’re known to support brain health, improve memory, and may even help with focus, thanks to compounds that stimulate nerve growth. On top of that, they’re packed with antioxidants and can help support a healthy immune system.

What You Need To Make Pan Fried Lion’s Mane

This simple side dish is so easy you only need 3 ingredients! You can use olive oil or any vegetable oil BUT butter just tastes better.

  • lion’s mane mushrooms
  • butter
  • sea salt or kosher salt

How To Clean Lion’s Mane

These toothy mushrooms are tender and don’t need a lot of scrubbing, cleaning or deep washing. You need to pick off visible dirt or soil. You can also brush it off with a dry dish towel.

I don’t recommend washing or soaking these mushrooms. They will soak up the water and become water logged. Even if you pan fry them from this state they will be still be soggy.

Where To Find Lion’s Mane Mushrooms

We have another version of these hericium mushrooms that grow in our woods, bear’s tooth. They’re delicious and we’re so lucky to forage them on our own land.

But they’re very seasonal so I was happy to see something similar come through our food club. I volunteer there and see so much produce come through the doors that eventually, the Lion’s Mane Mushrooms caught my eye. They looked so similar to the Bear’s Tooth Mushrooms and I HAD to try them.

If you don’t have a Food Club drop point near you, then Finding Lion’s Mane mushrooms might take a little effort. Try your local health food store, farmers’ markets, and specialty grocery stores.

You might also find them through local foragers or mushroom-growing kits if you’re feeling adventurous! We actually also have a local business that grows all kinds of mushrooms and sells them. I haven’t seen Lion’s Mane with them yet, but they have so many other varieties. I bet it’s only a matter of time!
