Why It’s a Classic
Eggnog pie takes a beloved holiday drink and transforms it into a dessert. Its smooth custard-like filling and hints of nutmeg and rum extract echo the flavors of traditional eggnog, while the sour cream topping adds a tangy contrast.
This pie is a perfect centerpiece for holiday gatherings, offering both simplicity and an old-fashioned taste of home. As well as featuring a family favorite flavor that everyone loves at the holidays.

What You Need To Make An Eggnog Pie
This pie doesn’t take a whole lot of special ingredients or even expensive ingredients, just make sure you have eggnog on hand.
- pie crust, just one, either homemade or store-bought
- granulated sugar (Short on sugar? Try these swaps)
- cornstarch
- eggnog
- unsalted butter, cubed
- rum extract
- nutmeg
- sour cream
- cinnamon, just a little to sprinkle on top
You can use real rum in place of the extract, no need to specifically buy extract. And if you don’t have either of those you can use vanilla in place of the rum or rum extract.

Why Does This Need a Topping?
The sour cream topping adds a creamy, tangy layer that perfectly balances the eggnog pie’s rich, sweet custard filling. Sour cream toppings have long been used in traditional desserts, especially in pies, to enhance texture and flavor.
This practice has roots in old-fashioned baking, where simple, readily available ingredients were combined to create contrast without adding a lot of cost.

How to Store
Eggnog pie should be stored in the refrigerator, covered with plastic wrap or in an airtight container. It will stay fresh for up to 3 days. Use a pie container in the fridge to keep the flavor fresh and perfect.
