A simple way to make soft homemade donuts using the bread machine for easy dough prep.

Dough
- 1 1/4 cups milk warm
- 1 large egg beaten
- 1/4 cup butter room temperature
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 3 1/2 cups white flour
- 1 1/2 tsp active dry yeast
Glaze
- 1/2 cup butter melted
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder Optional, only if you want to make the glaze chocolate
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 6 tbsp evaporated milk
Make the Dough
Add all dough ingredients to the bread machine in the order listed
Select the dough cycle and start the machine
When the cycle is complete punch down the dough
Transfer to a lightly floured surface
Shape the Donuts
Roll the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness
Cut into donut shapes using a round cutter
Re roll scraps and continue cutting until all dough is used
Place donuts on a parchment lined baking sheet
Cover and let rise in a warm place for 30 to 60 minutes until doubled
Fry the Donuts
Heat oil in a deep pot or fryer to 350 to 375°F
Carefully lift donuts and place into the oil in small batches
Fry about 1 minute per side until golden brown
Remove and place on a wire rack or paper towels
Make the Glaze
if making chocolate glaze mix the powdered sugar with the optional cocoa powder before doing anything else then proceed as directed
In a bowl mix melted butter powdered sugar vanilla and evaporated milk until smooth
Adjust milk for desired consistency
- Rise time includes the bread machine cycle and the second rise after shaping
- Do not overcrowd the oil while frying to maintain temperature
- Serve fresh for best texture
