A simple way to make soft homemade donuts using the bread machine for easy dough prep.

Equipment

  • Dutch oven or deep fat fryer
  • donut cutter

Ingredients

Dough

  • 1 1/4 cups milk warm
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 1/4 cup butter room temperature
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 1/2 cups white flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp active dry yeast

For Frying

  • 8 cups vegetable oil

Glaze

  • 1/2 cup butter melted
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder Optional, only if you want to make the glaze chocolate
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 6 tbsp evaporated milk

Instructions

Make the Dough

  • Add all dough ingredients to the bread machine in the order listed

  • Select the dough cycle and start the machine
  • When the cycle is complete punch down the dough

  • Transfer to a lightly floured surface

Shape the Donuts

  • Roll the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness
    Dough rolled out flat with a rolling pin on a lightly floured counter.
  • Cut into donut shapes using a round cutter

  • Re roll scraps and continue cutting until all dough is used
  • Place donuts on a parchment lined baking sheet
  • Cover and let rise in a warm place for 30 to 60 minutes until doubled

Fry the Donuts

  • Heat oil in a deep pot or fryer to 350 to 375°F
  • Carefully lift donuts and place into the oil in small batches
  • Fry about 1 minute per side until golden brown
  • Remove and place on a wire rack or paper towels

Make the Glaze

  • if making chocolate glaze mix the powdered sugar with the optional cocoa powder before doing anything else then proceed as directed
  • In a bowl mix melted butter powdered sugar vanilla and evaporated milk until smooth
  • Adjust milk for desired consistency

Finish

  • Dip each donut into the glaze
  • Place on a wire rack to set
  • Add sprinkles if desired

Notes

  • Rise time includes the bread machine cycle and the second rise after shaping
  • Do not overcrowd the oil while frying to maintain temperature
  • Serve fresh for best texture
