Sweetened Condensed Milk Substitutions
Sweetened condensed milk is a staple in everything from key lime pie to brownies—and sometimes even in coffee. But when you run out or need a lighter option, there are plenty of swaps that can save your recipe.

Why sweetened condensed milk — and sweetened condensed milk substitutes — are necessary
It will change a recipe completely if you leave out sweetened condensed milk. Here are a few reasons why you need it:
- Its thick, sticky texture helps hold ingredients together.
- It adds creaminess without the extra liquid of regular milk.
- It’s heat-stable, so it won’t curdle when cooked.

Sweetened Condensed Milk Substitutes
These ingredients will do in a pinch.
Heavy Cream and Sugar
Mix 1 cup heavy cream with ¼ cup sugar for a simple 1-to-1 swap.

Evaporated Milk, Sugar and Vanilla
Heat a 15-ounce can of evaporated milk with 1 ½ cups sugar and ½ teaspoon vanilla until dissolved. Simmer briefly, cool, and use cup-for-cup.
Coconut Milk and Sugar
Simmer a can of full-fat coconut milk with ¼ cup sugar for about 30 minutes until thick. It adds a light coconut flavor, just be aware.
“A great substitute is coconut milk! Make sure to use the full-fat coconut milk from the can and drain the water. Because of its high-fat content, it works beautifully. It may not be as sweet as traditional condensed milk but, it makes a delicious addition!”

Coconut Cream
Use cup-for-cup. Add ¼ cup of sugar if you want it sweeter.

Powdered Milk, Water, Butter and Sugar
Stir ⅓ cup powdered milk into ⅓ cup hot water with 2 tablespoons butter and a pinch of sugar. Use as a 1-to-1 replacement.
Milk, Sugar, Butter and Vanilla
Simmer 1 ½ cups milk with ½ cup sugar until reduced by half (about 30 minutes). Add 2 tablespoons butter and ½ teaspoon vanilla. Cool before using.
Almond milk and sugar
Reduce 2 cups almond milk by half, then stir in ⅔ cup sugar. Cool and use cup-for-cup.

Oat Milk, Sugar, Cornstarch, Vanilla and Butter
Combine 1 cup oat milk, ½ cup sugar, 1 tablespoon cornstarch, and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Heat until thickened, then stir in 1 tablespoon butter. Cool before using.
