Clementine Pumpkins For Halloween

These mini jack-o-lanterns are so fun to make and send in school lunches. They are also perfect for pre-school and kindergarten parties. We love them simply piled in a bowl on the counter. Clementine Pumpkins are just plain cute, so let’s make them.

We’re not one for making healthy Halloween trick-or-treat alternatives to hand out for Halloween. We like to hand out candy as much as everyone else! But we ALSO love these pumpkin cuties.

And they’re easy enough for kids to make too. That is if you allow them to use a sharpie marker. And that, from what I’ve discovered in my 30+years of parenting, is on a case by case basis.

What you need for these Clementine Pumpkins

Not a lot! In fact you just need two things for clementine pumpkins.

  • clementines or mandarin oranges
  • sharpies

Are Sharpies food safe?

I’ve been asked a lot about whether you can use a Sharpie on food, in this case a mandarin peel. The simple answer is yes, for this project. Because the food has a peel that you won’t eat, the Sharpie is safe. You want a Sharpie because any other marker will rub right off after you draw on the skin. Sharpies on the skin don’t wipe off.

One note about using a Sharpie: If you have small children who will be putting the tangerine in their mouths, that could be a problem. In that case, don’t give it to them.

And if you are handing them out at little kid parties, let the recipient’s parent know they are not for little ones who might gnaw on them.

Can I use larger or full-size oranges?

Yes, you can. I don’t think they’re as cute as cuties/clementines but they will work. If you’re making a batch of clementine pumpkins to keep in a fruit bowl, a couple of bigger oranges tucked in the bowl are cute.
