Welcome to Happenings on the Homestead #84! Well, another month is almost in the books. September, just another month in this wonky year! But I am thankful for cooler temps and a break from the garden.

National Preparedness Month
September is National Preparedness Month. And there is so much that each of us can do to be prepared. Check out Ready.gov for more helpful tips. Also, check out my posts on the subject:
Little Frugal Homestead tends to focus more on self-reliance but I feel they both go hand in hand. IF we experience a disaster, we are set up to weather those events due to our self-reliance mindset.

So far this year, our regions across the US have experienced a pandemic, wildfires, tornados, hurricanes, wind storms, drought, and flooding. Do you have a plan? If not, please give it some thought.

Homestead Garden Update
We completed a garden project this week! Our water spigot was outside the fence of the garden on the backside. Chris redid the spigot itself to have (4) separate spigots instead of one with a 4-way option. Then he ran pipe under the fence to give us a single spigot in the garden so we could reach all of our new garden beds. This project took a couple of weekends but it is now up and running.
Due to the weather after planting, we have had to replace some of the broccoli plants. We also planted seed in one bed for turnips. Dad likes turnip and we like greens. That’s a win-win!
We were picking grapes for the final time this week and noticed (6) volunteer potato plants in the upper garden. I think I am going to cover them with straw to see if I can keep them going over the winter.
Meal Plan
- Monday: Hamburgers and tater tots
- Tuesday: Chicken Pot Pie
- Wednesday: Leftovers
- Thursday: Out to eat
- Friday: Grilled pork chops, fried potatoes, and green beans
- Saturday: Swiss venison steak, rice, and broccoli
- Sunday: Grilled hot dogs, coleslaw, and chips

Pretty easy week for the meal plan. We did eat out Thursday because we were out of town for Chris’s eye doctor appointment. It was a late afternoon appointment and we decided to eat Japanese. We haven’t been to a sit-down restaurant for so long. It was a nice change of pace and we enjoyed ourselves. For the weekend we had family visiting so I cooked a lot of food! By Sunday, I was ready for a break – so grilled hotdogs with slaw!
Other Happenings
We got a nice surprise Friday. A text saying that my son Aaron would be headed our way with his twin daughters! They are exhausting and fun all at the same time. I am worn out! That is why 50-year-old women aren’t having babies, oh my word! It was a nice change to just have fun for a change.
I hope that you all are enjoying the fall weather and getting time with friends and family. Thank you so much for stopping by to check out this week’s Happenings on the Homestead!
